Traditional cardiovascular exercises, such as running and cycling, may burn calories, but often less efficiently than many expect. For example, running three miles at a moderate pace typically burns between 340 and 400 calories, roughly equivalent to a breakfast of porridge with bananas or a single fast-food item, illustrating the difficulty of achieving significant weight loss through cardio alone.
In response, exercise and diet have increasingly been reframed within competitive and gamified contexts, particularly among men. This approach embraces elements like goal-setting, data tracking, and social competition, which are seen as more motivating and engaging than conventional diets. App-based platforms incorporating points, levels, streaks, and leaderboards have become popular, enabling users to track meals, workouts, and daily check-ins, often fostering community involvement and accountability.
Research published in The Lancet in 2024 evaluated health apps using gamification and reported some benefits. Compared to non-gamified interventions, gamified apps were linked to increases in physical activity, reductions in body weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, and waist circumference.
