The Perak Public and Digital Library, recently upgraded with approximately RM3 million in funding, has introduced a new "home experience" concept aimed at fostering a welcoming environment that promotes learning, social interaction, and mental well-being among visitors of all ages. The initiative, led by Perak Public Library Corporation director Dr. Rafidah Abdul Aziz, envisions a space where senior citizens can read newspapers comfortably and where visitors are encouraged to feel relaxed enough to rest or even fall asleep, replicating the sense of being at home.

Despite these enhancements, the library’s current closure on Sundays has drawn criticism from frequent users and community members who argue that the facility’s accessibility is limited on a day when many people are free to visit. Sunday is often the only day off for working adults, parents, and students, who previously made significant use of the library’s resources.

Patrons recall that when open on Sundays, the library attracted large numbers of students from nearby schools who used the quiet environment to focus on their studies. Parents also frequented the library to engage their children in its diverse offerings. The library now encompasses more than just books, incorporating digital facilities, dedicated children’s areas, gaming consoles such as PlayStation 5, virtual reality headsets, and even a podcast studio.

Supporters of reopening on Sundays suggest that extending hours would maximize the value of the recent investment by allowing more community members to benefit from the upgraded amenities. They contend that maintaining Sunday operations aligns with the library’s intent to provide a comfortable and inclusive space for all visitors.

The Perak Public Library Corporation has yet to release a statement regarding potential changes to the Sunday schedule. Meanwhile, community voices continue to call for the library to restore Sunday hours in order to enhance accessibility and ensure that the new “home experience” is available throughout the week.
