Coral reefs worldwide are facing increasingly frequent bleaching events that leave them insufficient time to recover, raising concerns about their potential for irreversible decline, according to a report released Monday by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN).
The report highlights a sharp deterioration in global coral cover, which now sits well below historical levels. Manuel Gonzalez Rivero, lead author of the study and a scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science, emphasized that while corals possess the ability to recover if given adequate time, the rapid succession of bleaching episodes has severely curtailed this possibility. “The frequency of those bleaching events has pretty much doubled,” he said.
Coral bleaching occurs when corals expel the symbiotic algae living within their tissues, which provide corals with energy through photosynthesis and give them their vibrant colors. Without these algae, corals become prone to starvation and increased susceptibility to disease. Although bleached corals are not necessarily dead, they require cooler water temperatures over an extended period to regain their health.
According to the report, global coral cover remained relatively stable for approximately 40 years until around 2010, at which point a marked and rapid decline began. This shift has been linked to a combination of factors, primarily rising ocean temperatures associated with climate change, as well as other stressors including pollution and overfishing.
The decline in coral reefs has significant implications for marine biodiversity and the millions of people worldwide who rely on reefs for food, coastal protection, and income from tourism and fisheries. Coral reefs are also crucial for supporting diverse marine ecosystems.
The report underscores the urgent need for global climate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and for increased efforts to protect coral reef ecosystems from local stressors. Without intervention, experts warn that the degradation of coral reefs could reach a tipping point beyond which recovery is no longer feasible.
