Families facing poverty and crisis across the Boston area have once again turned to Globe Santa, a longstanding holiday gift program, to seek support during the winter season. Since its establishment 71 years ago by the Boston Globe Foundation, Globe Santa has helped connect donors with families who are struggling to provide basic necessities and gifts for their children amid challenging circumstances.
This year, a growing number of families have cited the added impact of deportation alongside other hardships such as illness, job loss, and housing instability. In one letter written in Spanish from the perspective of a child, a family described how the father’s deportation and the mother’s unsuccessful recovery from knee surgery, combined with the loss of a long-term job, have left them uncertain about stable housing and struggling to afford essential items like warm clothing and shoes.
The program regularly receives letters recounting the compounding burdens these families endure. Sociologist Matthew Desmond, author of “Poverty, By America,” characterizes poverty as a complex web of social issues that go beyond financial scarcity to include health challenges, housing problems, and mental health concerns. This year’s letters further illustrate this intricate reality, as several families report experiencing multiple simultaneous crises.
Some families have experienced catastrophic events that have severely undermined their financial stability. Globe Santa has so far heard from five households that lost their homes to fires, forcing them to rebuild lives from scratch. One mother highlighted the added strain of caring for her autistic son, who struggled to understand losing his sensory toys and other personal items in a blaze. She hopes for an opportunity to replace some of those items for the holidays.
Other accounts include a mother who endured a medical emergency requiring three weeks in intensive care, resulting in the loss of her job, and another caregiver balancing bills while tending to a terminally ill parent. These stories reveal difficult decisions parents face in weighing essential expenses against the desire to provide holiday gifts, with some forced to choose between celebrating Christmas and more pressing needs such as paying for a loved one’s funeral expenses.
Despite these hardships, many parents express resolute determination to bring joy to their children during the holiday season. Globe Santa continues to facilitate donations that help bridge the gap for families confronting poverty and crisis.
