Gloucestershire County Cricket Club experienced a challenging 2026 season marked by transition and rebuilding across both the men’s and women’s teams. The men’s side struggled particularly in the County Championship, while there were encouraging signs in the shorter formats and gradual progress in the women’s program.

In the County Championship, Gloucestershire finished at the bottom of Division Two, securing only three wins from 13 matches and ending the season in eighth place with 94 points. This was a step back from their sixth-place finish in 2025, reflecting difficulties in maintaining competitiveness in the longer format. James Bracey emerged as the standout player, leading the team in batting with 1,096 runs across 14 matches. Bracey’s contributions extended beyond the bat, as he also took 23 catches as wicketkeeper, highlighting his all-around value to the side.

While the batting showed promise, the bowling attack faced notable challenges. Will Williams was the leading wicket-taker with 35 dismissals from 11 matches, but Gloucestershire’s bowling unit lacked the depth and consistency required to regularly claim 20 wickets in a match. The team’s struggles were compounded by several departures, including Ajeet Singh Dale, Zaman Akhter, Josh Shaw, Tom Price, and Dom Goodman, resulting in a significantly different seam attack from the previous year. Nevertheless, the squad integrated several key players such as overseas pacer Gabe Bell, returning seam bowler Craig Miles from Warwickshire, and spin option Sai Kishore, all of whom contributed experience and variety during the campaign.

In the Vitality Blast T20 competition, Gloucestershire showed improvements but ultimately did not progress to the knockout stages. Australian all-rounder D’Arcy Short led the team’s batting with 446 runs at a strike rate of 158.2 and added 11 wickets. Dawid Malan, on a two-year T20 contract, brought experience to the batting lineup, while Jack Taylor scored 268 runs and took six wickets. The bowling attack was anchored by Duan Jansen, who took 16 wickets at an economy rate of 6.55, supported effectively by Marchant de Lange and Matthew Taylor. Despite competitive performances and some notable victories, the team was unable to secure a quarter-final berth.

The One-Day Cup was the most disappointing part of Gloucestershire’s men’s campaign. The side finished with three wins and five losses in the group stage, ending their campaign well short of the knockout rounds. Highlights included Oliver Price’s List A-best 122 against Warwickshire and a six-wicket victory over Kent, but defeats against several key opponents, including Leicestershire, Somerset, Surrey, and Lancashire, prevented a sustained challenge.

The women’s team, under new head coach Fran Wilson, showed steady progress in their first season with the club’s increased focus on women’s cricket. In the Vitality Blast, Gloucestershire finished third in League Two with a 5-3 record, securing a semi-final place against Kent at Sophia Gardens. Gloucestershire delivered a strong performance in the semi-final, with Amelie Munday scoring 71 runs and Alice Hill taking four wickets as they defeated Kent by 66 runs to reach the League Two final. However, they were unable to overcome Glamorgan in the final, losing by 32 runs despite a 52-run effort from Izzy Patel.

The women’s One-Day Cup campaign was more challenging, with Gloucestershire finishing sixth in League Two, recording three wins and five defeats. Georgia Cant led the team in runs, while Olivia Daniels was the top wicket-taker, promising signs of emerging talent as Wilson continues to develop the side.

Off the field, Jon Lewis transitioned into the role of director of cricket, working alongside head coach Mark Alleyne. The club secured an extended four-year partnership with Seat Unique and benefited from the elevated profile of women’s cricket regionally during the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup, which saw Gloucestershire host six tournament matches. The overall season underscored both the challenges and the potential within Gloucestershire’s squads as the club looks toward future rebuilding.
