A recent survey conducted by the GMB Union has revealed widespread concerns about the condition of school buildings, highlighting issues such as asbestos presence, dampness, and structural damage. The poll involved 4,500 school support staff and found that more than 25% reported asbestos-related problems in their workplaces. Additionally, approximately 50% of respondents indicated that their schools had leaky roofs, while 40% noted cracked walls.

The findings underscore ongoing challenges in maintaining safe and healthy environments for both school staff and students. Stacey Booth, representing the GMB Union, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that many school employees are compelled to work in unsafe, deteriorating facilities.

These conditions raise questions about the adequacy of school infrastructure investment and the potential health risks posed by exposure to asbestos and persistent dampness. The survey's results may prompt calls for increased government action and funding to address maintenance backlogs and ensure compliance with health and safety standards in educational settings.
