Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation set a new benchmark at the Tattersalls Book One Sale in Newmarket on Tuesday by spending a total of 15 million guineas (£15.75 million) on ten yearlings. The standout purchase was a colt sired by Night Of Thunder, acquired for 4.6 million guineas (£4.83 million), marking a record price for this prestigious sale.

The Night Of Thunder colt attracted fierce competition, with Irish breeding powerhouse Coolmore acting as the main underbidder. Anthony Stroud, the bloodstock agent representing Godolphin, described the colt as possessing an exceptional pedigree, strong physical attributes, and significant stallion potential. He expressed satisfaction with the acquisition, emphasizing the colt’s quality and promising future.

Sheikh Mohammed was present in Newmarket to oversee the transactions firsthand. Stroud also highlighted another key purchase from the session—a son of the renowned Frankel—bought for 1.8 million guineas (£1.89 million). He praised the colt for its movement and overall quality, underscoring the high standards maintained by Godolphin’s selections.

Commenting on Sheikh Mohammed’s presence at the sale, Stroud noted that it reflects the owner’s deep commitment to horse racing and breeding in Britain and Ireland. The involvement of such a prominent figure was seen as a positive indicator of continued support for the sport’s development in the region.

Godolphin’s substantial investment on the opening day of the Tattersalls Book One Sale signals confidence in the enduring value of elite bloodstock and the future prospects of these young horses in racing and breeding careers.
