Belgian heptathlete Nafissatou Thiam has established herself as one of the sport’s most accomplished competitors, with a career that places her among the top four female heptathletes in history. Reflecting on her journey, Thiam described her path into heptathlon as unintentional, revealing that she never fully specialized in any single event during her early teenage years but instead enjoyed a broad approach to athletics.
“I cannot really say I chose it,” Thiam remarked. “I think it kind of just happened. I started athletics when I was really young, and when you get to the age of 13 or 14, usually you choose the event you really want to do – and I just never specialized. I enjoyed doing everything.” This versatility has helped her compete at an elite level across multiple disciplines, allowing her to capture numerous international titles and gold medals on the global stage.
Thiam highlighted the difficulty in sustaining peak performance, noting that winning gold multiple times is a rare achievement in a sport as demanding as heptathlon. “Normally, at the peak of your career, you can hope for gold. To be able to get three times, and to also maintain that level for so long, that was definitely the hardest thing,” she said. Despite her impressive resume, Thiam remains focused on self-improvement and aims to better her personal best going forward. “I think that’s the best project you can have, working on yourself and trying to get better.”
Beyond athletics, Thiam extends her pursuits into other fields. She has earned a bachelor’s degree in geography, taken part in high-profile fashion events such as Paris Fashion Week, served as a humanitarian ambassador in Lebanon, and contributed to initiatives like the inaugural Nike Think Tank. Currently based in South Africa for her training, these diverse interests reflect her multifaceted approach to life off the track.
Thiam credits her ability to juggle various endeavors to a clear sense of focus and autonomy. “Blocking out the noise. I think you have to be able to go your own way and follow your own path, not get influenced by what people think you should do,” she explained. Support from family, friends, and long-standing partnerships has also played a key role in her career. Notably, she has maintained a continuous sponsorship with Nike, which was her first sponsor and remains a consistent source of support.
“I feel lucky as an athlete to have benefited from that support consistently. It’s a very uncertain job: you have good years,” Thiam noted, emphasizing the value of steady backing in a sport marked by its unpredictability. As she continues to balance athletic ambition with broader personal projects, Thiam’s journey illustrates a commitment to both excellence and versatility.
