Goldman Sachs has appointed Simon Lyons as co-head of UK investment banking, reinforcing its position in the City of London’s competitive financial sector. Lyons, 48, joins the Wall Street firm from Ardea Partners, where he has worked since 2024. He will share leadership responsibilities with Nimesh Khiroya, another prominent figure in London’s banking community.

Lyons brings extensive experience from across the investment banking industry. Prior to his tenure at Ardea Partners, he was a founding partner at PJT Partners, serving nearly nine years. His earlier career includes roles at UBS and involvement in a series of high-profile transactions. Notable deals include advising Mitie on its £3.1 billion takeover by a private equity-backed competitor this summer, assisting NatWest with the £2.7 billion acquisition of wealth manager Evelyn Partners in February, and contributing to Shawbrook’s £1.9 billion stock market flotation last year. He also played a role in the £2.2 billion sale of payments firm Network International to Canadian investment group Brookfield in 2023.

Goldman Sachs holds a major presence in the UK’s investment banking landscape, particularly in mergers and acquisitions. The bank has been a key advisor on seven of the ten largest UK M&A deals this year. These include the significant merger of Unilever’s food business with American company McCormick, as well as the £8.1 billion sale of insurance firm Beazley to Zurich Insurance Group, a transaction recently cleared by the High Court.

Lyons’s hiring is viewed as a strategic move to maintain Goldman’s influence amid a dynamic market, leveraging his track record of managing complex corporate deals. His appointment comes at a time when the UK investment banking sector is navigating shifting economic conditions and evolving client demands. With Lyons and Khiroya at the helm, Goldman hopes to build on recent successes and secure further major transactions in the coming months.
