Trainer Tony Gollan demonstrated his versatility at Eagle Farm on Saturday by securing a quinella in the Listed Queensland Cup over 2400 meters, a race typically favoring stayers rather than sprinters, an area where he is more commonly recognized. His horse Chillaxing, ridden by Daniel Moor, claimed victory at odds of $3.90, while Gollan’s other runner, Felix The Scat, finished second.
Moor, a former Victorian jockey and the regular rider for the Australian Bloodstock-owned Chillaxing, was sidelined at the Toowoomba Cup due to a precautionary steward’s withdrawal following an incident in the barriers. Moor returned to the saddle for the Queensland Cup, completing a treble on the day, and Gollan credited the synergy between horse and rider as pivotal to the win. Gollan also noted that Chillaxing, a former European horse, thrives over longer distances and has maintained strong form despite numerous runs this season.
In other feature races, Kintyre, last year’s Queensland Guineas winner, continued its strong performance for trainer Todd Pollard by winning the Listed Members Cup over 1400 meters. Meanwhile, Esperanza, a filly trained by Rex Lipp, delivered a standout performance in the QTIS 3YO Handicap (1000 meters), winning at $14 after a disappointing sixth-place finish in the Toowoomba Guineas.
Lipp attributed Esperanza’s improvement to the application of a tongue tie, which corrected a tongue-playing issue noted in her previous start. Jockey Angela Jones, guiding Esperanza to victory, acknowledged initial concerns about timing her finishing run but expressed confidence in the filly’s fitness and ability, which had been evident in prior racing preparations.
The day's events were overshadowed by a fall involving apprentice jockey Bella Youngberry in the second race. Youngberry, who has achieved 20 metropolitan wins in her first season racing in the city, was unseated from Metaphorically before dawn. She was conscious following the fall and transported to hospital, where she was subsequently cleared of serious injuries.
