Newcastle United have secured the signing of Spanish midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City on a long-term contract, the Premier League clubs announced on August 26. While the financial terms were not officially disclosed, British media outlets reported the transfer fee to be around £52 million (approximately S$90 million).

Gonzalez, 24, developed through Barcelona’s youth system before moving to Porto. He joined Manchester City in 2025 and made 59 appearances, scoring four goals during his tenure. In a statement, Gonzalez expressed enthusiasm about his new move, noting his previous experiences playing at St James’ Park with Manchester City and praising the club’s passionate fan base.

Despite initially wishing to remain at City, Gonzalez’s departure followed the club’s recent midfield reinforcements this transfer window, including the acquisitions of Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Elliot Anderson. His exit continues a trend of midfield changes at Manchester City this summer, with Bernardo Silva, Rodri, and Tijjani Reijnders also leaving the club.

Gonzalez’s arrival is expected to bolster Newcastle’s midfield, which has seen significant turnover with key players Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali departing. Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle welcomed the signing, highlighting Gonzalez’s “serious quality” and “elite experience” as valuable additions to a crucial area of the pitch.

The midfielder was officially presented to Newcastle supporters at St James’ Park prior to the team’s League Cup fixture against West Bromwich Albion on August 26. He will don the No. 6 jersey and represents Newcastle’s seventh senior signing of the summer transfer window.
