Google DeepMind, the artificial intelligence research division of Alphabet, is establishing a new robotics laboratory in Watertown, Massachusetts. The facility will focus on developing advanced hardware that complements DeepMind’s ongoing AI and robotics research efforts.
The lab will be located at the Arsenal on the Charles building, situated at 200 Talcott Avenue. According to city permits filed earlier this summer, Google has secured a lease for approximately 35,000 square feet of space at the site. Aaron Saunders, a recent DeepMind addition with a background at Boston Dynamics, announced the plans in a LinkedIn post. He indicated that the new lab will be staffed by machinists, engineers, and researchers dedicated to cutting-edge robotics development.
This expansion aligns with a growing trend of AI and robotics companies establishing a presence in the Greater Boston area. Google’s investment adds to its existing footprint in the region, where it currently operates a substantial office in Kendall Square near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus, employing around 2,000 people.
The Watertown lab is expected to bolster DeepMind’s capabilities in integrating artificial intelligence with physical robotics, signaling Alphabet’s broader commitment to innovation in this sector. Further details on the lab’s specific projects or anticipated timeline for opening have not been disclosed.
