Google is accelerating its recruitment of engineers in Singapore, driven by a strategic emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and its anticipated impact on the demand for skilled technology professionals. The company has hired over 85 specialists in under six months as part of the initial phase of its Google Cloud Singapore Engineering Center (SEC), which officially opened on September 15.
The SEC operates alongside Google DeepMind’s Singapore AI research laboratory, established in November 2025. This co-location brings together AI researchers, software engineers, and customer-facing engineers to develop solutions tailored for both local and global markets. The recent hiring effort supports a broader expansion initiative announced by Google in February 2026, which aimed to fill more than 150 positions in Singapore.
Moe Abdula, vice-president of technology and customer engineering for Google Cloud in Asia-Pacific and Greater China, highlighted Singapore’s strong talent pool, spanning early-career and experienced professionals. Abdula, who relocated from the United States to Singapore three years ago for his role, noted that Google maintains rigorous hiring standards, with no compromise on candidate quality despite the accelerated recruitment pace.
The move comes after a period of volatility in the global tech sector, during which Alphabet, Google’s parent company, significantly expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic before implementing substantial job cuts in 2023 amid normalization. However, Alphabet’s workforce has since rebounded, with employee numbers rising to 198,933 at the end of June 2026 from 187,103 a year earlier. In Singapore, Google employs over 3,000 people, with the SEC contributing meaningfully to net hiring growth.
The expansion coincides with robust growth in Google Cloud’s business, which reported an 82 percent revenue increase year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026. Abdula indicated that demand for talent extends beyond AI specialists to include cybersecurity, data analytics, and software engineering roles, as companies integrate AI into various functions.
A key element of Google’s strategy involves forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) who work closely with corporate clients to develop end-to-end solutions. These engineers combine strong technical skills with consultative abilities to address client needs effectively. Abdula cited Google’s collaboration with Grab as a case in point, where engineers helped develop a voice translation system accommodating diverse dialects and accents, improving communication between drivers and passengers across Southeast Asia. Additionally, DeepMind researchers customized weather models to optimize delivery logistics for Grab, enabling riders to avoid rain and traffic disruptions.
Pee Beng Kong, executive vice-president of Singapore’s Economic Development Board, welcomed Google’s continued investment, emphasizing the opportunities the SEC provides for local talent to gain expertise in advanced technologies.
The establishment of the SEC has also brought some Singaporean Google employees back to the city-state. Software engineer Chris Chen returned from Google’s London office to work on the Cloud interconnect team, while Zhang Xinyi, who interned at Google Taiwan, moved to Singapore to align with her career goals.
Despite concerns about AI potentially displacing software engineering jobs, Abdula argued that AI acts more as a productivity enhancer. Although AI-generated code accounts for an increasing share, Google continues to hire engineers, viewing AI as a tool that reduces repetitive tasks and empowers developers to focus on designing superior user experiences.
Abdula expressed confidence in the profession’s future and encouraged younger generations to pursue software engineering careers. He underlined that the SEC’s mission goes beyond AI model training by engineering comprehensive, secure, and scalable solutions tailored for enterprise needs, positioning Singapore as a critical hub for real-world AI deployment.
