The government’s Propriety and Ethics Team has cleared Paymaster General Nick Thomas-Symonds of any wrongdoing following allegations that he sent inappropriate text messages to a female member of Parliament. An internal review found no evidence of improper conduct.
The Cabinet Office confirmed that the team examined the exchange of messages between Thomas-Symonds and the individual but determined that no further action was required. The investigation did not evolve into a formal probe, as officials concluded that the matter did not warrant one.
Independent standards adviser Sir Laurie Magnus, appointed by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, also reviewed the situation and agreed that no investigation was necessary. Sir Keir was informed of the findings and accepted Sir Laurie’s recommendation.
It is understood that the meeting between Thomas-Symonds and the Propriety and Ethics Team was primarily to inform the minister about the concerns raised. Throughout the period of scrutiny, Thomas-Symonds has maintained his support for Sir Keir amid ongoing leadership challenges within the party.
