Senior government officials have proposed delaying the upcoming Upazila Parishad (UP) elections from November to January, citing ongoing administrative priorities and educational activities as key factors influencing the recommendation.

During a recent inter-ministerial meeting involving 27 ministry leaders, participants emphasized that government departments will be extensively engaged in executing development projects, implementing the government’s 180-day programme, managing social safety net initiatives, and distributing beneficiary cards throughout November and December. Officials expressed concern that conducting elections amid these activities could impede the delivery and effectiveness of such programmes.

Education sector representatives further underscored the challenges posed by the scheduled annual examinations and numerous extracurricular events involving millions of students during the late-year months. These factors were highlighted as potential sources of disruption should the elections proceed as initially planned.

Based on these considerations, the cabinet secretary and other top officials recommended moving the UP elections to begin in January. The proposed change aims to minimize interference with both government operations and the academic calendar, ensuring a smoother electoral process while allowing uninterrupted focus on ongoing developmental and educational commitments.
