Myanmar’s President U Min Aung Hlaing, currently on an official visit to India, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to a multiparty democratic system during a meeting with Myanmar Embassy and Military Attaché Office families, as well as scholarship trainees at the Myanmar Embassy in New Delhi on Monday evening.

This visit marks U Min Aung Hlaing’s first foreign trip since assuming the presidency, which was made at the invitation of the Indian government. Addressing those present, the President highlighted the longstanding historical and diplomatic ties between Myanmar and India, noting their shared border and cultural connections dating back centuries.

Reflecting on Myanmar’s political progress, the President referenced the initial democratic government term during which peace negotiations led to a measure of stability, and noted that provisions safeguarding ethnic group rights are encapsulated in the 2008 Constitution. He emphasized efforts to ensure free and fair elections, pointing out that the country’s elected representatives have since convened in the Hluttaw, with the government entrusted to carry out state responsibilities.

U Min Aung Hlaing stressed that his administration is “firmly continuing along the path of a multiparty democratic system,” committing to governance in line with the 2008 Constitution. He acknowledged the need for constitutional amendments to address evolving circumstances but advocated for such changes to proceed only with the approval of the Hluttaw, while protecting the nation from any detrimental outcomes.

Turning to domestic challenges, the President characterized Myanmar’s education system as deficient, citing limited knowledge and skills that restrict individual advancement. Addressing this, he stated that raising the overall standard of education is a priority alongside broader reforms spanning the economy and national development during the current five-year governance period.

The President also called on embassy and military attaché families serving in India to actively contribute and foster cooperation between Myanmar and India in all feasible ways. He encouraged these officials abroad to maintain unity and uphold their roles as civil servants dedicated to the nation’s interests.

Concluding the event, U Min Aung Hlaing presented food supplies and cash awards to the Myanmar Embassy families, Military Attaché Office staff, and scholarship trainees in recognition of their service. The evening concluded with a dinner hosted jointly by the embassy and Military Attaché Office families along with the presidential delegation.
