British government officials have issued a warning that cybercriminals could soon exploit artificial intelligence (AI) technology to target bank accounts, raising concerns about an imminent rise in AI-enabled cybercrime. Security experts affiliated with the Cabinet Office and Britain’s AI Security Institute, which evaluates AI technologies before their public release, estimate that this threat may materialize within the next three to five months.
The alert highlights the growing threat posed by AI models developed outside the West, particularly in China. According to insiders, Chinese AI technology permits developers to remove embedded safety restrictions that typically limit the model’s capabilities. Such restrictions often prevent AI from generating harmful content or engaging in illegal activity, such as building bomb designs or facilitating cyberattacks. However, newer Chinese AI models reportedly allow these safeguards to be easily disabled, raising fears that malicious actors could repurpose the technology for criminal uses.
One government source expressed concern that hackers from Russia, Nigeria, and other nations could soon have access to AI tools capable of bypassing sophisticated password protections, enabling them to steal personal information, erase corporate data, and commit financial fraud with greater efficiency.
In response to these risks, a government spokesperson emphasized the need for businesses to adopt robust cybersecurity measures. Recommended actions include implementing the Cyber Essentials framework, adhering to guidance issued by the National Cyber Security Centre, and ensuring that cyber risk management is addressed at the highest levels of corporate governance.
While the exact timeline for the emergence of AI-powered cyberattacks remains uncertain, officials stressed the importance of preparedness as the capabilities of AI continue to evolve rapidly.
