The UK Government has reaffirmed its commitment to recovering funds owed by PPE Medpro, a company linked to entrepreneur Michelle Mone, following a legal dispute over a £122 million contract for personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite a High Court ruling ordering PPE Medpro to repay the amount plus interest by October 15 last year, no repayments have been received to date.
PPE Medpro, founded by Mone’s husband, Doug Barrowman, secured a contract from the UK government’s COVID-19 “VIP lane” in 2020 to supply 25 million sterile gowns to the National Health Service (NHS). These gowns were later found to be substandard and not meeting NHS requirements. The company maintained that it had complied with the contractual terms and that the gowns were sterile. However, the dispute escalated into legal action after the government challenged the quality of the PPE supplied.
The company entered administration on September 30, just one day prior to an unfavorable court judgment. During the course of the controversy, it emerged that Michelle Mone and Barrowman had received approximately £65 million in profits linked to PPE Medpro, despite Mone publicly denying involvement in the firm or profiting from the contract.
Susan Murray, the Scottish affairs spokeswoman for the Liberal Democrats, criticized Mone’s denials and called on the government to ensure all owed funds are recovered. Murray highlighted concerns that the supply of substandard PPE may have placed NHS staff and patients at risk during the crisis. She urged the government to uphold prior commitments made by Labour leader Keir Starmer, who had pledged to reclaim every penny of the taxpayer money involved.
Keir Starmer previously stated that efforts to recover funds would be relentless, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding public money. A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care reiterated this position, affirming the government’s determination to pursue payments from failed suppliers like PPE Medpro.
In the latest development, Interactive Advisory, the joint liquidators appointed to oversee PPE Medpro’s administration, have initiated legal proceedings against Michelle Mone, Doug Barrowman, and related parties. The case seeks to address the financial liabilities associated with the failed PPE contract and recover taxpayer funds.
