The Sri Lankan government has rejected claims by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) that it was prevented from using the Salgago Grounds in Anuradhapura for a public rally scheduled on September 12. A government official clarified that the venue had already been reserved by the Sri Lanka Police for a five-day program commemorating its 160th anniversary.

The official further stated the government’s willingness to allow the SLPP to use the grounds, suggesting that the ruling party expects a low turnout for the rally. “We are confident the SLPP rally will draw a small crowd, leaving most of the space empty,” the source remarked.

The disagreement underscores ongoing tensions between the government and the SLPP, with both parties disputing the facts surrounding access to public venues for political events. The SLPP had alleged that it was being obstructed from holding its rally at a prominent location, which the government denies, emphasizing prior bookings and logistical considerations.

The Salgago Grounds, located in Anuradhapura, is a notable public space frequently used for large gatherings, and the police's anniversary event occupies it from September 10 to 14.
