Graduate job vacancies in the United Kingdom have fallen to their lowest recorded level since tracking began in 2016, according to recent data from the recruiting website Adzuna. In July, just 8,383 entry-level positions targeted at graduates were advertised, representing a 45% decline compared to the same period last year.

This significant drop illustrates a marked deterioration in the employment landscape for recent university leavers. The current number of graduate vacancies is notably lower than figures from earlier in the decade; in 2017, for instance, more than 55,000 such positions were available.

The sharp contraction in opportunities comes as a record 262,820 students are expected to start university this September. This influx of new graduates entering a challenging job market raises concerns about the availability of suitable roles upon completion of their studies.

Industry observers point to several factors contributing to the decline, including increased uncertainty in the broader economy and the disruptive impact of advancing technologies like artificial intelligence, which threaten to reshape entry-level roles across various sectors. The combination of these pressures is placing additional strain on a graduate job market that now appears less robust than in previous years.
