Six young sailors from Grafham Water Sailing Club competed in the inaugural RYA Junior Club Championships held on September 19-20, facing teams from across the United Kingdom. Having qualified in second place from the eastern region, the Grafham team delivered strong performances in varying and demanding weather conditions.

The sailors, aged between nine and fifteen, included students from Swavesey Primary and The Perse Schools. This was the first major competitive event for many of the participants. The regatta featured races in two classes of boats: Toppers and RS Fevas. Grafham’s team organized itself so that two pairs rotated sailing the Fevas while the other two sailors alternated in the Toppers.

Saturday’s racing was marked by very strong, gusty winds that limited the schedule to five short races. The challenging conditions led to several capsizes, and the Grafham Feva experienced a broken kicking strap, although the crew managed to finish fourth in the race despite the equipment failure.

Sunday brought lighter and more variable winds, causing a delay while race officials worked to establish a suitable course. Once racing commenced, the Topper sailors adapted well to the shifting breezes, competing in a total of 18 races and securing several second- and third-place finishes, including one outright win.

Following the Topper races, the Feva crews returned to the water, with their rigging repaired after Saturday’s damage. Initially, results were modest, prompting the team to forgo the spinnaker to better suit the smaller course. This strategy led to improved finishes, with multiple third and fourth places.

Throughout the event, teamwork proved essential, as quick transitions between crews required coordination. The athletes supported each other in all aspects, including rigging, launching, and boat recovery. The weekend combined tactical learning with enjoyment, highlighted by discussions on race strategies and a positive team spirit.

By the conclusion of 36 races, Team Grafham secured third place in the Topper fleet and finished fourth overall in the combined standings. Participants reflected on the experience as both educational and highly enjoyable.
