The Recording Academy has announced the introduction of five new categories for the 2027 Grammy Awards, alongside updated rules for the Best New Artist category. The changes were unveiled on Tuesday and reflect ongoing efforts to recognize a wider array of musical genres and creative contributions within the global music industry.
The new categories set to debut at next year’s ceremony include Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best R&B Collaboration Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best Traditional Folk Album, and Best Latin Song. These additions followed extensive feedback from Recording Academy members, aiming to better represent the evolving landscape of music worldwide.
In addition to expanding the genre categories, the academy revised eligibility criteria for the Best New Artist award by increasing the number of times an artist can be submitted for consideration from three to four. This adjustment is intended to provide emerging artists with additional opportunities for recognition, particularly those who may have previously reached the eligibility limit before achieving broader public attention.
The Best New Artist award has been a significant platform for rising stars, with recent recipients including Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, and Olivia Dean. The rule changes could broaden the pool of artists eligible to compete for this distinction in future ceremonies.
Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, highlighted the significance of these updates, stating they reflect the diversity and range of current musical styles and contributors. He expressed optimism that the changes would enrich the awards and celebrate artists who are driving innovation within the industry.
The Grammy Awards ceremony, often described as the biggest night in music, is scheduled to return to Los Angeles in February 2027. The upcoming event will be the first to feature the newly introduced categories, marking an ongoing shift towards more inclusive and representative recognition of global musical expression beyond the traditional categories that have long defined the awards.
