Fra’ Max Rumney has resigned abruptly from his position as Grand Prior of the Knights of Malta in Great Britain, citing health and personal reasons. The Order announced the resignation, which came as a surprise to many within the organization and beyond.

Fra’ Max, 58, had served as Grand Prior since his appointment in 2022. The role is a senior leadership position within the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, an ancient Roman Catholic chivalric order whose hierarchy includes members known as “Knights of Justice” who have taken vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The Grand Prior oversees one of the Order’s key divisions, maintaining both spiritual and administrative responsibilities.

Philippa Leslie, director of communications for the Order of Malta, confirmed that Fra’ Max submitted a formal letter of resignation to the Grand Master of the Order, who accepted it. At the request of the Grand Commander, who serves as Fra’ Max’s immediate religious superior, the Procurator of the Grand Priory of England will collaborate with him to determine his future role within the Order and his religious vocation.

Sources close to Fra’ Max describe him as “a very gentle soul” and “a charming man,” noting that his unexpected departure has stirred significant discussion among members of the Order. He has not responded to inquiries following his resignation, raising speculation that he may be observing a vow of silence as part of his religious commitments.

The Knights of Malta, with a history dating back several centuries, have long blended social prestige with religious devotion. Former leaders have included notable figures such as the 5th Earl of Gainsborough and Prince Rupert Loewenstein, known for his role advising the Rolling Stones. Despite this stature, the Order faces challenges similar to other institutions, with Fra’ Max’s resignation highlighting internal pressures within its ranks.
