A 92-year-old grandfather, Malcolm Kitts, died after becoming entangled in barbed wire during a walk on Maerdy Mountain in south Wales. The incident occurred on September 22, shortly after Kitts had celebrated his birthday with family. He was a regular walker in the area, departing from his home in Cwmdare on the day he went missing.
When Kitts failed to return, his family raised the alarm, prompting a search involving mountain rescue teams, police officers, and volunteers. He was located the following day by police on the mountain, suffering from hypothermia with barbed wire wrapped around his leg. Emergency services airlifted him by helicopter approximately 31 miles to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Kitts passed away on October 1. A post-mortem examination revealed that he had developed pneumonia and acute renal failure. The inquest into his death was held at Pontypridd but adjourned for a later date.
Kitts’s wife, Joyce, publicly thanked the police and mountain rescue teams, praising their coordination and efforts in organizing the search and rescue operation. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
