Authorities in Mechanicville, New York, are investigating the deaths of six family members found in an apartment earlier this week, with a 64-year-old woman suspected of being involved in the killings. The bodies of Amy Steadman, her daughter Sarah Myers, 44, and four grandchildren — Harper Harmon, 13; Hudson Harmon, 11; and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn Harmon — were discovered on Tuesday evening during a welfare check.
Police responded after a neighbor reported concerns due to the family’s recent lack of activity. Unable to make contact, officers coordinated with building management to gain access to Steadman’s apartment. Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt reported that the victims’ bodies showed signs of decomposition, indicating they had been deceased for an extended period prior to discovery. Myers and her children lived in a separate unit within the same building.
A preliminary investigation suggests intentional poisoning as a likely cause of death for some of the individuals. Chief Rabbitt noted the presence of a handwritten note and other circumstantial evidence pointing to Amy Steadman’s involvement. However, authorities have not disclosed details of the note and emphasized there is no indication of outside involvement.
The exact causes and manners of death remain undetermined pending further toxicology testing and medical examiner review. Officials have also not established a motive. Police cautioned that final conclusions regarding responsibility will depend on the completion of all investigative processes.
The case remains under active investigation as authorities work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the six family members.
