A 71-year-old woman in Anhui province, China, recently made headlines after she rescued a man who had plunged into a river in an apparent suicide attempt. The incident occurred on July 13 in Suixi county near a local river.
According to reports, Liu Defang, who had only recently taught herself how to swim, was conversing with friends close to the riverbank when she heard someone shout that a person had fallen into the water. Video footage shows the man climbing onto the railing of a nearby bridge before leaping into the river, apparently attempting to drown himself.
Without hesitation, Liu entered the water and helped bring the man to safety. Despite her brave and quick response, she downplayed the act, describing the rescue as "not a big deal."
Local authorities have not released further details about the man’s condition following the incident or the reasons behind his actions. Liu’s courageous intervention, however, highlights the impact of timely assistance in emergency situations and has drawn attention for her determination despite learning to swim only recently.
