Sunderland is set to welcome back Granit Xhaka as the club prepares to resume its pre-season activities following a training camp in the United States. The 33-year-old midfielder played a pivotal role in Sunderland’s successful campaign last season, which culminated in qualification for the Europa League.

Manager Regis Le Bris expressed enthusiasm about Xhaka’s return, describing the Swiss international as a key figure in setting the team’s standards and influencing squad behavior. Despite reported interest from Chelsea and a potential reunion with manager Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge, Xhaka opted to remain with Sunderland. Le Bris confirmed that transfer talks have concluded and indicated he has deliberately refrained from contacting the player during his offseason, respecting his need for rest and family time after the World Cup.

“We want to give them an opportunity to rest and enjoy time with their family,” Le Bris said. “They’re still in touch with the club and we’re looking forward to seeing him next week because he sets the standards.”

Sunderland’s pre-season schedule includes friendly matches against French Ligue 1 sides RC Lens and Rennes, ahead of their Premier League opener against Ipswich Town. Le Bris highlighted the importance of building on the foundation laid last season, noting the progress made in defensive organization, counter-attacking play, and effectiveness on set pieces.

“Last season, we created a strong culture throughout the year,” Le Bris said. “We started with the idea to stay in the league and were really focused on our defensive shape, with the ability to counter-attack. We built other layers, and by the end of the season, we were balanced and able to manage different situations properly. So we have that advantage this season.”

As Sunderland enters its European campaign and embarks on another Premier League season, the return of a key player like Xhaka is seen as a significant boost to the club’s ambitions.
