The Green Party has put forward proposals aimed at significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by rationing meat, fuel, and air travel. The party, led by Zack Polanski, is advocating for government-imposed limits on the consumption of high carbon goods as part of the transition to a zero-carbon economy.

One key proposal calls for a system where individuals would be allocated specified quantities of dairy, meat, and petrol, effectively reintroducing rationing measures to curb environmental impact. According to the motion, limiting access to these carbon-intensive products would contribute to lowering overall emissions during the shift toward more sustainable practices.

Additionally, the party is proposing a 50 percent reduction in animal farming, which is expected to decrease the consumption of meat and dairy products substantially.

The plans have drawn criticism from opposition figures, including Conservative chairman Kevin Hollinrake, who described the measures as excessive government control, stating, “The Greens would hand the state control over what’s on your plate.”

A spokesperson for the Green Party clarified that while hundreds of motions had been submitted for consideration, only a select few would be debated, and these proposals represent part of a broader conversation about strategies to address climate change. The proposals emphasize the party’s commitment to ambitious carbon reduction targets but have sparked debate on the balance between environmental goals and personal freedoms.
