Lazy Griff returned to winning form at Sandown Park on Sunday, securing his first victory since early 2024 in the Coral Marathon. Trained by Charlie Johnston, the colt had previously competed at the highest level, including a second-place finish in the 2025 Derby and a third-place showing in the Irish Derby, both times behind Lambourn. His campaign last year was interrupted by an injury that limited his appearances.

The four-year-old, who had taken third in a Group Three race at Sandown earlier this season, capitalized on a drop in class to Listed level, leading throughout to defeat Lady Vivian convincingly under jockey Billy Loughnane.

Johnston acknowledged the challenges the horse has faced on the road back to form. "It's been a long old road," he said. "It's nice to get back in the winners' enclosure."

Looking ahead, Lazy Griff remains entered in prestigious contests including the Group One Goodwood Cup and the Irish St Leger. Johnston indicated a preference for the latter as potentially offering the colt’s ideal conditions but noted that the Goodwood Cup could form an interim target.
