The New York Yankees will be without center fielder Trent Grisham for an extended period after medical imaging on Monday revealed a moderate strain in his right hamstring. Manager Aaron Boone indicated that while he initially expected a brief absence, the injury’s severity means Grisham is likely to miss at least two to three weeks. Boone noted the outfielder has been able to participate in some baseball-related activities, but the team will have to manage without him for the foreseeable future.

Grisham had been showing promising signs in recent weeks, posting a .994 OPS over his previous 20 games and recording four extra-base hits in his last seven outings. His injury comes at a difficult time for a Yankees lineup already dealing with multiple setbacks.

Spencer Jones returned to the center field position, where he is most comfortable, during Tuesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox, contributing a home run in the Yankees’ 12-2 victory. Meanwhile, the team continues to be without slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who aggravated a right calf strain that has kept him sidelined since late April. Stanton experienced renewed discomfort while running the bases and has had an MRI confirming the re-injury. He had hoped to return by Wednesday, but that timeline is now uncertain.

On the catching front, Austin Wells, who has been sidelined with cervical headaches, began a minor league rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday. Wells went 0-for-3 with a walk behind the plate and is slated to catch part of Wednesday’s game before potentially serving as designated hitter on Thursday. The Yankees are hoping Wells can return to form, as he had struggled offensively before his injury, recording a .533 OPS with just one hit in his last 18 at-bats.

J.C. Escarra and Ali Sánchez have also contributed limited offensive production behind the plate. The Yankees entered Tuesday tied for the lowest OPS among catchers in Major League Baseball at .526, although Escarra managed two hits during Tuesday’s game.

Additionally, top prospect Jasson Domínguez missed Tuesday’s lineup after having a tooth extraction. Meanwhile, shortstop George Lombard Jr. was removed from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s game Tuesday after apparently jamming his wrist while covering second base during a stolen base attempt. Though he finished the inning, Lombard did not continue in the game. The 21-year-old has been performing well recently, entering Tuesday with an eight-game hitting streak that included six doubles and two home runs. With difficulties faced by the Yankees on the left side of the infield, Lombard is considered a possible candidate for a call-up this season.

On the pitching side, Boone reported that Max Fried experienced no issues after a bullpen session Tuesday as he recovers from a left elbow bone bruise that has kept him out since mid-May. Fried is currently asymptomatic and is expected to rejoin the rotation next month.
