The incident occurred at an altitude exceeding 5,000 meters on the Nepalese side, where a section of glacier fractured and fell rapidly down a steep valley. The falling ice and rock gained momentum, transforming into a high-speed debris flow that reached Gyirong Port on the Chinese side within seven minutes, obliterating border facilities and burying much of the area under mud and debris.
In Nepal, entire villages were swept away by the slide, resulting in significant loss of life and thousands reported missing. On the Chinese side, dozens of travelers and local residents remain unaccounted for as recovery efforts continue.

Similar incidents have become more frequent worldwide, such as the fatal glacier collapse on Italy’s Marmolada peak in 2022 and an ice-rockslide in Switzerland’s Blatten village in 2025. Thawing permafrost and glacier retreat undermine the structural integrity of mountain slopes, increasing the likelihood of sudden and severe mass movements.
Beyond mountain glaciers, climate change continues to threaten global populations through rising sea levels, extreme rainfall, flooding, and prolonged droughts. Coastal megacities from Shanghai to New York are investing in protective infrastructure to counter sea-level rise, while small island nations contemplate relocation as sea encroachment intensifies. Inland regions face increasingly severe floods due to extreme rainfall, as seen in Beijing and other parts of China.
