A 5-year-old girl from Queens suffered fatal injuries in an incident that led to her mother’s arrest on second-degree murder charges, authorities said Friday. Prosecutors revealed that the child, Fabiana Cabello, sustained severe trauma to her heart, eyes, lungs, and brain.
The discovery was made Wednesday evening at the family’s residence in South Richmond Hill after 32-year-old Francis Cabello contacted emergency services and admitted to killing her daughter. First responders arrived just before 7 p.m. and found Fabiana face down on the floor with blood coming from her nose.
Francis Cabello was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court and held without bail. Officials have yet to provide details regarding the circumstances leading to the fatal injuries or whether any additional factors influenced the case.
Speaking outside the courtroom, Fabiana’s grandfather, Franklin Cabello, expressed the family’s devastation. He described feeling both mentally and physically shattered and mentioned placing trust in their faith during the difficult time. Franklin characterized Francis as a respectful and quiet woman who had a loving relationship with her daughter.
“She wasn’t in control. She didn’t make this decision in her right mind. She was under some kind of influence,” he said. Despite the tragedy, he said, “I forgive my daughter,” becoming emotional during his remarks.
Investigators continue to examine the case as the community grapples with the shocking loss. Authorities have not released further information on any ongoing inquiries or next steps in the legal process.
