The Cleveland Guardians defeated the Chicago White Sox 7-6 in a dramatic walk-off victory on Tuesday night at Progressive Field, intensifying the competition for the American League Central division title. The win allowed the Guardians to reclaim first place in the division by a half-game over the White Sox, who had held at least a share of the lead since early July.
The game swung in the Guardians’ favor in the ninth inning following a two-run double by Brayan Rocchio. Facing right-handed reliever Grant Taylor with two strikes, Rocchio connected on a high-velocity sinker that eluded the reach of White Sox left fielder Sam Antonacci near the warning track. Antonacci described his attempt to catch the ball as a difficult route over and back but acknowledged the need for improvement. Manager Will Venable defended Antonacci, noting it was a challenging play and not the sole reason for the loss.
The White Sox had built a 6-5 lead entering the ninth but ultimately could not hold it. Taylor, pitching his second inning, allowed a leadoff single to Nathaniel Lowe and a walk to Patrick Bailey, which put runners on base before Rocchio’s decisive hit. Despite having Rocchio at an 0-2 count, the Guardians capitalized on a fastball up in the zone to seize the victory.
Earlier, the White Sox rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to take the lead with a four-run sixth inning. However, reliever Sean Newcomb struggled in the sixth during a critical earlier game moment. After issuing two walks, Newcomb gave up a three-run homer to Petey Halpin, which helped the Guardians take a 5-3 lead. Additional runs were scored later in that inning off a double by José Ramírez, with the Guardians eventually securing a 6-3 win the following day in Cleveland. That defeat marked the first time the White Sox fell out of first place since July 4 and reflected a recent challenging stretch where the team has lost 11 of its last 16 games.
Despite the setbacks, Venable remained cautiously optimistic. “Tough to not have that lead, but at the same time, we’ve got a long ways to go here, a lot can happen,” he said. The White Sox enter the final 10 games of the regular season holding the third American League wild card spot, 1½ games ahead of the Texas Rangers, who were scheduled to host the Boston Red Sox later Wednesday.
The White Sox now face mounting pressure as they try to regain momentum down the stretch. Meanwhile, the Guardians have demonstrated resilience in pivotal moments, applying increased urgency in their hunt for the division crown.
