Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola emphasized the urgency of his team’s pursuit of the Premier League title following a series of setbacks that have widened the gap between them and league leaders Arsenal. Despite domestic cup successes, recent dropped points and the team’s Champions League exit have complicated City’s path to the championship.

Guardiola pointed to draws against Nottingham Forest and West Ham in March as particularly costly moments that have significantly impacted their title challenge. “The gap is big. I cannot deny,” he admitted, reflecting on the difficulties the team now faces. With only a handful of matches remaining, the manager stressed that City must win nearly all their remaining fixtures to have any chance of overtaking Arsenal.

Of the eight games left on their schedule, including a crucial home match against Arsenal, Guardiola said the team needs to secure victories in at least seven. A postponed Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace, due to Palace’s involvement in European competition, means City’s season will extend into these final weeks under even greater pressure. “We have to win all of them. We can’t drop one—forget about it,” he stated. Still, he allowed that winning upcoming matches against Chelsea and Arsenal could keep the team’s hopes alive, even if he remains cautious about the likelihood of clinching the title.

While acknowledging the challenge, Guardiola praised the competitiveness and prestige of the Premier League. He characterized it as an 11-month, 38-game marathon that demands consistency and resilience, remarking that the difficulty of the league is why he grants considerable respect both to his own teams when they succeed and to opponents who win the title.

Amid the season’s ups and downs, Guardiola expressed satisfaction with the recent resurgence of striker Erling Haaland. After a relatively slow start to the year that included a scoreless performance in the Carabao Cup Final, Haaland’s form has improved markedly. The Norwegian forward netted a hat-trick against Liverpool in the FA Cup last weekend, a performance that lifted spirits within the squad. Guardiola highlighted Haaland’s importance, noting the striker's relentlessness and mental strength. “Erling is so important for us,” he said. “Every season Erling will be better and better.”

Guardiola also discussed the mental aspects of elite sport, drawing parallels between football and golf, emphasizing the ability top athletes have to quickly move on from mistakes. This mindset, he suggested, is key to Haaland’s current uptick in form and will be crucial for the team as they strive to maintain their challenge through the final stretch of the season.
