Gufram, the Italian furniture company known for its surreal and playful designs, has reintroduced Fachiro, a distinctive pouf featuring a spiny appearance. The piece draws its name from the Italian word for "fakir," referencing ascetics reputed for walking on hot coals or spikes.

Originally designed in 1975 by Florentine architect Marzio Cecchi while he was a student at the University of Florence, Fachiro exemplifies the experimental spirit of Italian Radical Design. Cecchi, who passed away in 1990 at the age of 49, created the pouf as part of his early work, which has attracted growing interest among collectors in recent years.

Charley Vezza, chief executive of the Italian Radical Design group—which owns Gufram—discovered Cecchi’s work through a contact in Dallas. Vezza noted that the recognition of this Italian design by an international audience indicated its cultural resonance. He described Fachiro as a fitting addition to Gufram’s existing lineup of unconventional pieces, including a cactus-shaped coat rack and a lounge chair resembling a patch of turf.

Despite its intimidating look, Fachiro’s sharp "spikes" are soft to the touch, made from leather tubes filled with Styrofoam pellets and sewn onto a vinyl surface. The pouf stands 23 inches tall and is available in silver, black, and red finishes.

The piece is scheduled to be displayed from Tuesday through Sunday at the Salone del Mobile design fair, located in Pavilion 22, stand B30. It will be presented alongside other products from Italian Radical’s portfolio, including collections from Meritalia and Memphis Milano. Further information is accessible on Gufram’s website.
