The integration of electricity and water networks among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries is a strategic priority for enhancing regional energy and water security, according to Dr. Sabeeh Al-Mukhaizeem, Kuwait’s Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy. Speaking on Monday during the 31st meeting of the GCC Ministerial Committee for Electricity and Water Cooperation in Bahrain, Al-Mukhaizeem emphasized the importance of building on existing partnerships to develop more sustainable and integrated projects.
The minister highlighted that the shared interests and collective destiny of GCC member states provide a strong foundation for expanding cooperation in critical infrastructure sectors. He pointed to the development of the GCC electrical interconnection system and ongoing studies related to water interconnection projects as key strategic investments aimed at securing resource sustainability and stability for the future.
The meeting focused on several core agenda items, including updates on the status and expansion of the GCC electrical interconnection and efforts to improve its usage. Representatives also reviewed the activities of the GCC Interconnection Authority, with an emphasis on boosting the reliability and stability of power systems across member states through enhanced coordination.
In the water sector, officials discussed advances in studies examining the feasibility of water interconnection projects between GCC countries, alongside progress on bilateral initiatives. These efforts are intended to reinforce collaboration in managing water resources, improve water security, and increase preparedness for emerging challenges.
The committee also reviewed initiatives planned for 2027, such as the Unified Gulf Forum for Electricity and Water Regulators, and discussed broader participation in regional and international conferences related to electricity and water. The meeting served as a follow-up on the implementation of resolutions issued by the GCC Supreme Council to deepen cooperation among member states in these essential service areas.
Kuwait’s delegation, led by Al-Mukhaizeem and including Undersecretary Dr. Adel Al-Zamel, Water Facilities Department Director Engineer Maha Al-Hajri, and other ministry officials, underscored the country’s commitment to collective GCC efforts. The delegation’s involvement reflects a broader strategy to support integrated Gulf action that enhances shared systems and infrastructure, addressing future energy and water demands efficiently and sustainably.
