An 18-year-old man has been charged in connection with a friendly fire incident involving New York City police that left a veteran detective wounded. Camani Barletto of West Orange, New Jersey, was arrested after a confrontation early Sunday morning in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, authorities said.

Barletto faces multiple charges including two counts of attempted murder, two counts of weapons possession, two counts of reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief. The incident occurred around 4:15 a.m. when Barletto reportedly approached an unmarked NYPD vehicle occupied by four uniformed officers while carrying a firearm.

Detective Robert Karroll, a married father of three who was days from retiring after decades on the force, was shot in the back during the exchange. Police said officers fired on Barletto after he allegedly brandished a 9mm handgun, but their gunfire missed the suspect and instead struck Karroll. A preliminary investigation supports that the injury was the result of friendly fire.

Surveillance footage obtained by authorities shows Barletto interacting with several individuals outside a deli on Nostrand Avenue at about 4:05 a.m., approximately ten minutes before the shooting. During this time he displayed the handgun, allegedly aiming it at one man before briefly entering the store. Upon exiting, Barletto reportedly fired at a passing Uber vehicle, though neither the driver nor passenger was hit.

Following the initial shooting, Barletto is said to have approached the unmarked police SUV once more, moving alongside the driver's side with his gun visible before stepping directly in front of the vehicle. He fled the scene but was apprehended several blocks away by responding officers.

Detective Karroll was transported to a hospital for treatment of his injury. Authorities have not provided updates on his condition. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing as officials review body camera footage and other evidence to clarify the sequence of events that led to the injury of the detective.
