Six people were fatally shot on Monday at a youth welfare facility in Stade, a town in northern Germany located approximately 19 miles west of Hamburg. Police detained two individuals, including the suspected gunman, amid an investigation into the incident, which took place in the facility that provides temporary accommodation for pregnant women and young mothers with children.
According to authorities, five victims—four women and one man—died at the scene, while a sixth adult died later at a hospital. Several others were wounded, with some suffering serious injuries, though exact numbers and conditions have not been fully disclosed. The identities of the victims have not been released.
The facility is situated on a cobbled, tree-lined street bordered by red brick homes, a location briefly sealed off by police who deployed forensic experts and plainclothes officers to conduct their inquiry. A witness reported hearing gunshots and described how police rapidly cordoned off the area following the shooting. Local media noted that a man and a woman attempted to flee the scene in a car before being intercepted by police, although authorities have not clarified the reasons behind the second person's detention or confirmed any charges against them.
Officials have not yet determined a motive for the attack. A police spokesperson indicated that the investigation remains ongoing, with no immediate explanation provided for the shooting.
Residents near the site reported heightened alarm after the incident. Vitali Mertens, living across the street from the facility, described the swift police response and lockdown of the neighborhood. Nearby, children at a local nursery were inside during the event, prompting authorities to notify parents to collect school-aged children for their safety.
Mass shootings in Germany are relatively rare due to stricter gun control laws compared to countries like the United States, though notable violent incidents have occurred in recent years. In 2023, a gunman killed six people at a Jehovah’s Witness worship hall in Hamburg before taking his own life. Another mass shooting took place in Munich in 2016, where nine people were killed by an 18-year-old assailant.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Stade shooting and have urged the public to avoid speculation as the case develops.
