Gerringong delivered a determined performance to claim victory in the $250,000 Group 3 The Nivison (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday, providing a significant boost for trainers Chris and Corey Munce. This marked her fourth start since joining the Munce stable, where she overcame previous setbacks to secure a hard-fought win.
Starting from a wide barrier, jockey Tyler Schiller was directed to push the mare forward early, a tactical decision that proved crucial. Despite covering extra ground throughout the race, Gerringong maintained her composure and strength, edging out a tight finish. In a three-horse contest for the win, she narrowly prevailed over Queensland-trained Arabian Rose, while race leader Nepo Baby held on for third place.
Schiller credited the mare’s resilience and racing heart for the victory. “Corey Munce was happy to roll forward today from the awkward barrier and she got stuck there,” Schiller said. “She was tough when it counted because she never really felt like the winner until right on the line. She is an herculean little mare... what she lacks in stature, she makes up for in heart.”
Gerringong’s success comes after previous stints with prominent trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. Last year, she placed second in The Invitation at Randwick, showcasing her competitiveness at a high level. Corey Munce indicated that the stable’s immediate focus is to target that same race in the near future.
Saturday’s result underscores Gerringong’s ability to adapt and perform under new training conditions, reaffirming her status as a consistent performer in elite sprint events.
