The HBO Max comedy series "Hacks" set a new record for Emmy nominations in a single year for a comedy show, receiving 24 nods for its fifth and final season. When including its nomination in the short form nonfiction or reality series category, the total rises to 25. This surpasses the previous record of 23 nominations held by "The Bear" in 2024, which was later matched by "The Studio" last year.
"Hacks" centers on the complex relationship between Vance, a fading Las Vegas comedy icon portrayed by Jean Smart, and Ava Daniels, her socially aware writer played by Hannah Einbinder. The final season, which concluded in May, addressed themes such as Hollywood injustices, intergenerational dynamics, and legacy building, all delivered with a blend of humor and insight.
Jean Smart received another nomination for lead actress in a comedy series, continuing a streak that began in 2021 and yielded four consecutive wins. Over her career, Smart has amassed seven Emmy Awards, and an eighth win would tie her with Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for the most Emmys earned by a female performer.
Hannah Einbinder earned her fifth nomination for supporting actress in a comedy series; she won her first Emmy for the role last year. In a statement, Einbinder expressed gratitude and admiration for her peers and the show’s creators, crediting Paul W. Downs, Jen Statsky, and Lucia Aniello for significantly impacting her career.
Supporting actress nominations extended beyond Einbinder, with Meg Stalter also recognized in the category. Paul W. Downs, who co-created the series, was nominated for supporting actor in a comedy. The show also secured five guest actress nominations for Leslie Bibb, Cherry Jones, Laurie Metcalf, Kaitlin Olson, and Lauren Weedman.
Other comedy series that received nominations this year include "Abbott Elementary," "The Bear," "Margo’s Got Money Troubles," "Nobody Wants This," "Only Murders in the Building," "Shrinking," and "Widow’s Bay."
