Haeran Ryu extended her lead to four strokes after a challenging third round at the BMW Ladies Championship on Saturday, held at Pine Beach Golf Links in Haenam-gun, South Korea. Playing in difficult conditions marked by strong winds and heavy rain, Ryu posted a 4-under 68, reaching a cumulative 17-under 199 through 54 holes. The 25-year-old South Korean, who began the round with a two-shot advantage, finished with birdies on her final three holes, recovering from her only bogey of the tournament on the par-3 15th.
Ryu, a two-time major winner this season at the Women’s PGA Championship and the Evian Championship, is pursuing her sixth LPGA Tour title. She attributed her success during the tough weather to strategic shot-making and club selection. "It was a long day, playing over six hours," she said. "Because of the wind and rain, I used longer clubs and focused on hitting straighter shots, which worked well."
Trailing Ryu are Minji Park and Hye Jin Choi of South Korea, along with Japan’s Yuri Yoshida, all tied for second place at 13-under. Park carded a bogey-free 65, highlighting seven birdies, including a strong finish with three consecutive birdies. Park credited her ability to adjust her game and manage the course in difficult conditions for her solid performance.
Choi made a significant move with an 8-under 28 on the front nine, featuring six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole. However, she struggled on the back nine, including a double bogey on the 17th hole, which tempered her overall round of 66. “I felt confident early and was able to make a lot of birdie putts,” Choi said.
In fifth place at 12-under are South Korea’s Minju Kim and Spain’s Julia Lopez Ramirez, who posted rounds of 69 and 70 respectively. Four players share seventh place at 11-under: South Koreans Hyo Joo Kim and Minsun Kim, Thailand’s Chanettee Wannasaen, and American Lauren Coughlin.
Defending champion Sei Young Kim faced a difficult day, dropping 39 spots to a tie for 62nd after a 77, which included three double bogeys and two bogeys, offset by one birdie and an eagle on the par-5 17th hole.
The BMW Ladies Championship is the second event of a four-tournament fall swing on the Asian circuit, with forthcoming stops in Malaysia and Japan.
