Chris Haigh has been appointed Managing Director of Entain’s New Zealand operations as the company seeks to focus more intently on the unique characteristics of the New Zealand gambling market. Entain, an international bookmaker, manages the day-to-day operations of the New Zealand TAB under a 25-year agreement between the two organisations.

The creation of the New Zealand-specific managing director role reflects Entain’s recognition that, despite similarities between the New Zealand and Australian gambling markets, each is at a distinct stage of development and presents different regulatory and commercial challenges. Haigh said the New Zealand market had experienced significant changes since Entain became involved, with further regulatory developments, including the introduction of online casino licences, expected soon.

“While we have the full backing of Entain’s large international business, this role ensures a dedicated focus on New Zealand’s particular challenges and opportunities,” Haigh explained.

In parallel, Entain has also appointed a managing director for its Australian operations, Chris Ward. Both Haigh and Ward will report to Andrew Vouris, chief executive of Entain Australia and New Zealand. Vouris described the leadership changes as positioning the company for its next phase of growth, emphasizing a focus on innovation, accountability, disciplined execution, and compliance across both markets.

Haigh, a New Zealand native originally from the North Shore, has a background in structural engineering, having studied at Takapuna Grammar and Auckland University. After relocating to Australia and working with companies such as Virgin and Foxtel, he joined Entain and moved back to New Zealand two years ago to live with his family in the Waikato.

Haigh noted the recent Football World Cup had been a particularly intense period for the TAB, with punters in both Australia and New Zealand actively engaging with the event. He acknowledged that while some outcomes, such as Kylian Mbappe’s performance for France, resulted in heavy payouts, that is an inherent part of the betting business. “There are days we win and days the punters win, which is what it is all about,” he said.

The appointment comes as Sam Moncur, one of the most recognised executives in the New Zealand TAB and Entain’s local business, prepares to leave the company. Moncur expressed confidence in Haigh’s leadership, praising the progress made during his tenure and affirming that the business would be in capable hands moving forward.

Haigh’s new role aims to strengthen Entain’s local presence and relationships in New Zealand as the company navigates an evolving regulatory environment and pursues growth opportunities distinct from those in Australia.
