A severe thunderstorm struck the southwestern German city of Reutlingen, bringing hailstones described by residents as being "the size of cherries." The intense downpour caused flooding on local roads and led to power outages affecting approximately 6,000 households.
Reutlingen had been experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius prior to the storm. In response to the accumulation of hail, city workers deployed an excavator to clear the affected streets. This episode echoes a similar event three years ago when a heavy hailstorm required the use of snow ploughs to manage the large deposits.
The combination of high temperatures followed by sudden hailstorms highlights the ongoing challenges posed by extreme and volatile weather patterns in the region. Officials have not reported any injuries but are continuing efforts to restore full power and clear remaining debris.
