House Democratic Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries criticized former President Donald Trump on Thursday for his conduct during the recent World Cup trophy presentation at MetLife Stadium. Speaking at a Capitol Hill press conference, Jeffries described Trump’s behavior as an embarrassing attempt to draw attention, characterizing him as an “old man in a club” unwanted by others.

The remarks came in response to events following Spain's 2-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final on Sunday. Trump, who had been greeted with boos upon entering the field, was reluctant to leave the stage as the Spanish team prepared to celebrate with the trophy. FIFA President Gianni Infantino, a close associate of Trump, reportedly attempted to guide him off the stage, but Trump remained near the celebration as players began their joyous moment.

Jeffries suggested that the incident reflected Trump’s ongoing desire for the spotlight rather than addressing substantial national issues. "He’s always chasing attention," Jeffries said, adding that Trump "disgraced himself" and seemed oblivious to the discomfort of those around him during the trophy ceremony.

This was not the first instance of Trump’s actions drawing public attention at major sporting events. Last summer, he was criticized for a similar episode at the Club World Cup final, where English club Chelsea claimed victory. On that occasion, players reportedly asked Trump when he would step aside, indicating their frustration with his extended presence during their celebration.

In addition to the World Cup incidents, Trump faced boos at Madison Square Garden during Game 3 of the NBA Finals, where the New York Knicks suffered their sole loss on the way to a 4-1 series defeat. Some fans speculated that Trump’s appearance might have affected the team’s performance that night.
