A new horror film, *Hallowarrior*, blends elements of survival thriller and seasonal suspense in a story centered on a teenage girl isolated in a post-pandemic world. The film follows 16-year-old Pumpkin, portrayed by Milly Shapiro, who has spent nearly four years alone in her rural family home after a devastating disease wiped out most of humanity.

Set against the backdrop of an American countryside, Pumpkin is determined to maintain her family’s Halloween traditions despite her isolation. She broadcasts a radio invitation to celebrate the spooky season, a call that attracts unwelcome visitors led by a character named Thalia, played by Shannyn Sossamon. The encounter triggers escalating tension and conflict, forming the core of the film’s suspense.

Shapiro, known for her standout role in Ari Aster’s *Hereditary*, carries much of the film on her shoulders with an almost constant on-screen presence. Her portrayal captures the blend of youthful vulnerability and hardened resilience shaped by years of solitude and self-reliance since the age of 12, which the narrative uses to justify both her character’s naive and tough decisions.

The film utilizes its characters' psychological depth to ground its more extreme scenarios, creating a believable and engaging story world. This is complemented by carefully crafted production design that ranges from inviting, cozy "cottagecore" Halloween motifs to atmospheres reminiscent of classic horror settings like the Bates Motel, enhancing the film’s eerie tone.

*Hallowarrior* marks the feature directorial debut of Ben Sottak, who has a background in short films. His work here demonstrates a promising ability to balance horror conventions with innovative storytelling. The film became available for streaming on Shudder and AMC+ starting October 16.
