As Halloween approaches, travelers planning to bring costumes on their trips should be aware of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidelines to avoid delays or confiscations at airport security checkpoints. With Americans expected to spend a record $13.5 billion on Halloween-related items this year, including costumes, many are also traveling to popular destinations such as Sleepy Hollow, New York, and Salem, Massachusetts, known for their seasonal celebrations.
Thomas Spagnola, senior vice president of travel technology firm Fareportal, provided advice on how to pack costumes and related accessories to comply with TSA regulations. Key considerations include restrictions on carrying liquids, replicas of weapons, and costume components that may trigger security concerns.
Makeup products such as liquid latex, fake blood, and other liquid or cream-based items commonly used to enhance costumes are allowed in carry-on baggage only if they comply with the TSA’s liquid limits—containers must hold no more than 3.4 ounces and fit inside a single quart-sized, clear, resealable bag. Larger quantities should be checked in luggage.
Replica props that resemble explosives, including grenades, bombs, and rocket launchers, are prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage. Other weapon-like costume accessories, such as knives, swords, pitchforks, brooms, and light sabers, are generally not permitted in carry-on luggage but may be allowed in checked bags. Travelers are advised to exercise caution with items that appear realistic, as TSA officers have discretion to assess potential security risks.
Costume choices can also affect the screening process. While comfortable outfits like jumpsuits or pajamas can be worn through security checkpoints, costumes featuring metal components should be packed rather than worn to the airport to avoid triggering metal detectors. Full-face makeup and masks are discouraged until after screening, since passengers may be asked to remove masks or clean their faces to verify identity.
Spagnola encouraged travelers to consider purchasing certain costume accessories upon arrival at their destination to minimize complications during security checks. Following these guidelines can help ensure a smoother travel experience for those celebrating Halloween away from home.
