Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has confirmed that seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton will remain with the Italian squad for the 2027 season. The 41-year-old British driver has shown a resurgence in form, highlighted by his recent maiden victory for Ferrari, and continued strong performance during Friday’s practice session at Silverstone.

Speaking to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Vasseur acknowledged that Hamilton initially faced challenges adapting to Ferrari following his switch from Mercedes last year. "Everything was new to him and Lewis isn’t one of those drivers who moves team every two or three years," Vasseur said. He added that Hamilton has now settled in, familiar with the team’s approach and personnel, and “with these good results, he’s entered a virtuous circle.” Vasseur also noted that the current Ferrari car was not specifically built around Hamilton's driving style.

At the British Grand Prix, Hamilton demonstrated his pace by topping the first free practice session with a fastest lap of 1 minute 29.260 seconds, edging out Mercedes driver and current championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 0.213 seconds. Hamilton’s immediate Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc, placed third, 0.599 seconds slower, followed by George Russell in the second Mercedes and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen was sixth for Red Bull, just ahead of defending world champion Lando Norris.

Hamilton, a record nine-time winner at Silverstone, has described the current Ferrari as underpowered but has nevertheless shown significant competitiveness. Ahead of Sunday’s race, Ferrari announced that Hamilton and Leclerc would participate in a pre-race parade lap featuring mini-cars constructed from Lego bricks. The event has received mixed feedback from drivers, some of whom have expressed frustration over the increasing amount of unpaid promotional activities required in Formula 1.

With his contract extension now confirmed, Hamilton is poised to continue his bid for further success with Ferrari as the season progresses.
