British boxer Hamzah Sheeraz is aiming for a high-profile clash with Mexican star Canelo Alvarez following Alvarez’s recent victory in Riyadh. On Saturday, Alvarez reclaimed the WBC super-middleweight title by defeating Christian Mbilli via unanimous decision after 12 rounds.
Sheeraz, 27, who remains unbeaten, has expressed his desire to test himself against one of the division’s best fighters. “Why not test myself against the best? I’m in this game to be the best,” Sheeraz said. “To put myself in there with someone like Canelo is stuff you dream of. I’m training harder and harder. It’s starting to become more of a reality.”
Sheeraz won the WBO super-middleweight championship in May with a second-round knockout of Alem Begic and successfully defended the belt against Simon Zachenhuber. However, he vacated the title in September rather than face mandatory challenger Janibek Alimkhanuly, who was designated after a failed drug test and subsequent suspension.
The British fighter enjoys strong support within Saudi boxing circles, with Turki Al-Sheikh, the head of Saudi boxing, appointing Sheeraz as an ambassador for the Riyadh Season event. Alvarez has a lucrative relationship with Al-Sheikh, having signed a four-fight deal last year reportedly valued at up to £300 million. Since then, Alvarez has overcome William Scull and Mbilli but fell to Terence Crawford in a notable defeat.
With one fight remaining under Alvarez’s contract with Al-Sheikh, Sheeraz appears well positioned to secure a significant opportunity, potentially setting up a blockbuster showdown between the unbeaten British fighter and the Mexican legend.
