Hanley Town ended Bootle’s unbeaten league run with a 1-0 victory on Saturday, handing the hosts their first league defeat of the season. The match took place at Hanley Town’s home ground and marked a significant upset as Bootle had been seeking their 11th consecutive league win.
The lone goal of the game came shortly before halftime, when Lewis Porter scored his tenth goal of the season. Max Van Der Laan delivered an accurate cross that Porter expertly converted in the 42nd minute, putting Hanley ahead.
The contest featured several pivotal moments, including a missed penalty early on. In the 20th minute, Hanley was awarded a spot kick after Bootle goalkeeper Joe Mason fouled Fin Pattison inside the penalty area. Porter took the penalty but Mason managed to save the effort, keeping the scoreline level at that stage.
Bootle responded with attacking opportunities through Matty Fenton and Declan Daniels, but neither was able to break through Hanley’s defense. Hanley, meanwhile, came close to extending their lead with chances for Devante Ramsey, who tested Mason with two strong efforts.
The closing stages were dramatic as Bootle were awarded a penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time after Hanley's Corey Muirhead handled a cross in the box. Ben Hodkinson stepped up to take the spot kick and his attempt represented Bootle’s last chance to salvage a draw. However, debutant Hanley goalkeeper Caleb Clothier saved the penalty, preserving the 1-0 victory and ending Bootle’s winning streak.
Clothier’s performance was widely noted as key to Hanley’s success, with his crucial save preventing Bootle from extending their unbeaten run. The result marked a significant boost for Hanley Town in the Division One West standings and halted Bootle’s momentum at a critical point in the season.
