Jihang Ortega, a 55-year-old dialysis specialist working at Flushing Hospital, died after being struck by a vehicle in a Queens crosswalk on the evening of June 14. The incident occurred around 9:05 p.m. near 38th Street and 34th Avenue, less than two blocks from her residence in Astoria.
According to eyewitness accounts, Ortega was crossing the street within the marked crosswalk when she was hit by a southbound Chevrolet Malibu. Emergency responders transported her to Elmhurst Hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The driver, a 58-year-old woman, remained at the scene and has not been charged. The police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Ortega’s longtime friend and roommate, Victoria Gordon, 74, a retired nurse, described Ortega as a dedicated worker who had just finished a 13-hour shift. Ortega was reportedly working six days a week while pursuing a PhD in critical health. Originally from Korea, Ortega had moved to the United States to complete her nursing education and often sent money back to her family.
Gordon, who lived with Ortega for 18 years, recounted Ortega’s adjustment to American culture and her affection for her pet Chihuahua mix, Brady. “She loved Brady to death,” Gordon said. “She was always holding Brady.” Gordon also reflected on their shared experiences, including trips and cultural outings, emphasizing the closeness of their relationship. “I am her family,” Gordon said.
Ortega’s death comes amid a period of declining traffic fatalities in New York City. City officials reported a 7% decrease in traffic deaths during the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, with 42 fatalities marking the third-lowest number on record since 1910. Despite these overall improvements, pedestrian fatalities such as Ortega’s underscore ongoing safety challenges.
Authorities have not released additional details about the investigation into the collision or the extent of any potential charges against the driver. The community continues to mourn Ortega’s loss as the probe continues.
